1922 uncaptioned sepia tone Azo (triangles both ways) depicting a Memorial Day gathering on May 30 1922. Writing on back explains: 'To Cousin C. A. Trcz[hard to read] & Family / Memorial / Tue May 30 1922 / In [hard to read] cemetery Miss Anna Smith spoke Lincoln address. Rev. C. C. Sh[hard to read]y spokesman for cemetery Rev Andiers? M.E.C., Rev. Brown & Thomas all present. P. S. of A. with G.A.R. Mrs. S. F. Thibbs? & Olie with others decorated graves in Soldier Square Ms. Gibb waved the flag over each grave. Very solom service as it may be the last for the living veterans of the Civil War 1867.' Bottom corner crease, ding in the bottom edge, a few spots of toning both sides. May 30 1922 was a Tue[sday]. Solemn is misspelled solom here. PS of A or the Princes of Syracuse is a Knights of Pythias boys organization. The Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery of Summit Hill Pensylvania was incorporated in 1879 and came under the direction of Post 177 of the G. A. R. in the late 1880's. A section of it came to be known as "Soldiers Square" where eventually 76 known Civil War Veterans were buried. As noted in the message, most of the 76 had been laid to rest by 1922, according well with the size of the gathering seen here. There is a Polish church [St. Stanislaus] in Summit Hill which accords well with the obvious ethnicity of the addressees. $75.00 $65.00 mp(s)cc

"280. - Afrique Occidentale / Montanes du Macina / Sépultures de Habibès à l'intérieur les plus / retirés et les plus inaccessibles de la / falaise." showing a native boy & several skulls at the entrance to cliff caves that once served as burial places for Tellern hunter-gathers & Dogons who conquered them. Then in French Soudan, now in Mali; surely one of the most inaccessible places on earth. The village of Yendouma is probably nearby at the base of the cliffs. The terminology 'Montanes du Macina' is not in modern usage & the burial of Habibès tribe members as stated in the caption is problematic at best. Despite these errors, publisher Fortier in Dakar Sénégal counted this amongst his best views, adding advertising to the back as follows: 'POST CARDS / Great choice of wiews(sic) and / natives of whole / West Africa. / COLLECTION FORTIER / on sale at FORTIER / CLOSE TO POST-OFFICE'. Because of the errors we mention, it is not likely that many were distributed like this. One of the best African postcards we have ever seen, and worthy of the finest collections of French West Africa. There is a faint small corner crease that is hard to detect from the front because it blends in with the rocks. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg format. $2.00 fmmcc

Grave monument for Loren Bosworth & Percie U. Bosworth on an obviously unique sepia-tone real photo postcard mailed May 5 1908 from Eastford Connecticut, stamp removed. No printed caption, no photographer attribution; obviously taken as a favor for Louise Thomas in West Haven Connecticut to whom it was addressed. Sender comments on back: 'Thought you'd be interested in seeing what a fine finish old Loren had. Took 14 horses to bring it [the monument] over from Abington [about 6 miles away].' What is unspoken is that Loren Bosworth's cattle frequently strayed into town causing their impoundment & resultant disputes with hard feelings. Loren lived March 1824 - November 1903; Percie, April 1834 - December 1962. We speculate that Loren's grave was subjected to desecration from those enemies who survived him from 1903 until 1908, so his relatives put up the massive monument as if to say ... let us see them move that one! $17.50 $15.00 c(e)cg SALE PRICE: SAVE $2.50 (14% OFF)
