AUSTRALIAN-ORIENTAL LINE. Changte & Taiping. "A-O LINERS // 'CHANGTE' / AND / 'TAIPING' // AUSTRALIA -- MANILA -- PHILIPPINE ISLANDS -- HONG KONG -- CHINA -- JAPAN" showing the Taiping from the side, view looking towards shore; circa-1928 postcard, minor corner & edge wear, tiny corner creases nowhere near the image. Ports of call of these Australian-Oriental Line ships included Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns, Thursday Island, Hong Kong, and Lord Howe Island. Both ships were used in forcible deportations of ethic Chinese to China as part of the 'White Australia' policy. Circa-1907 Dairen (previously Port Arthur & Dalny & Дальний; subsequently Dalian & 大连市) under Japanese occupation following the Russo-Japanese War. Lot of 10 unused postcards from the same booklet (original owner sent 2 which we do not have), all removed neatly, all with minor corner wear, all lightly toned backs, all specifying DAIREN in English before captioning continues in Japanese:
The winter scenes are important: the harbor did not often ice in -- which was why the Russians were willing to fight the Japanese for a year-round port which they otherwise would not have. If the English in the captions surprises you, recall that the British occupied it before the Russians, and consider that it was principally American & British money that financed the Japanese during that war! While the text on the back ostensibly appeals to protectionist economics & politics, the illustration on front took advantage of racist anti-Chinese sentiments of the time. [For example, in 1882 the US Congress passed the Chinese exclusion act, which prohibited their immigration to the US for the next ten years.] A disgusting piece of social history.
