BOSWORTH.
Massive grave monument
for Loren Bosworth & Percie U. [Ursula Weeks] Bosworth on an obviously
unique sepia-tone real photo postcard mailed May 5 1908 from Eastford
Connecticut, stamp removed. No printed caption, no photographer attribution;
obviously taken as a favor for Louise Thomas in West Haven Connecticut to
whom it was addressed. Sender comments on back: 'Thought you'd be interested
in seeing what a fine finish old Loren had. Took 14 horses to bring it [the
monument] over from Abington [about 6 miles away].' What is unspoken is that
Loren Bosworth's cattle frequently strayed into town causing their
impoundment & resultant disputes with hard feelings. Loren lived March 1824
- November 1903; Percie, April 1834 - December 1862, bearing him 6 children. We speculate that
Loren's grave was subjected to vandalism / desecration from those enemies who survived
him from 1903 until 1908, so his relatives put up the massive monument as if
to say ... let us see them move that one! Notice the paste residue near the
bottom front, suggesting that the recipient valued the message more so than

a flowery hat, some letters obsured by it so we filled in what is shown here

in one of the hat projections. Apparently the pharmacist hired a quality
artist to cut these quickly for prominent customers, and then pasted the

BYCROFT
& DORSEY. "HARRY / BYCROFT / Livery & Sale Stable" with our caption taken
from the only legible sign, showing a crowd gathered around a lengthy
electric interurban train that had stopped there; unused sepia-tone AZO real
photo (triangles point up) postcard. Pencil writing on back puts location at
Concord Michigan. We disagree: the Macoupin County coroner reported in 1910
(about the time of this postcard) that a George Dorsey fell to his death at
Harry Bycroft's barn in Gillespie Illinois; and Bycrofts live to this day in
Gillespie. Also, the Illinois Traction System ran electric interurban
service through Gillespie. Probably one of a kind, because there is no
caption & no attribution to a photographer or publisher.
