RealEstate_SpecialExcursionBoth-200-460_small.jpg genealogy post card available from Judnick.com
ELY. "SPECIAL EXCURSION / MEXICO-AMERICAN LAND CO." sepia-tone postcard with red caption, mailed December 20 1910 at Bunkerhill Kansas by Mabel Ely to Mr. Don Ely in Galion Ohio, upper left front corner reduced slightly by sender's scissors cut to separate it from a panoramic view, hint of cancel ink on front. The company, based in Kansas City, was previously unsuccessful at establishing a canal across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca State. But this scene is not in Oaxaca. There are only 8 snow-capped peaks in Mexico. The silhouettes of the volcanic mountains in the distance definitively place this scene in Veracruz State, looking towards the west at the foothills & Volcán Citlaltépetl (dormant since 1687 & North America's third highest peak). Apparently the original panoramic view (of which this was part) was distributed to by-then quite probably disgruntled investors to prove there was land worth developing in Veracruz State -- with its flat terrain & reasonable roads having some appeal to farmers. Any material on this company is scarce: most of it is in Spanish, and images such as this are unheard of today. $18.50 m(v)rvg(e)

Hawaii_HCR_Front-200_small.jpg genealogy real photo available from Judnick.com  Hawaii_HCR_Side-200_small.jpg genealogy postcards available from Judnick.com
Two unused SSSS real photo postcards showing front & side views of a gasoline-powered White Motor Company railbus (number 3 of 3) received by the Hawaii Consolidated Railway (its logo conspicuously on the side) for passenger traffic (tourist & local commuter) near its company shops in Waiakea. The gentleman on the left is Richard W. Filler, HCR Manager. On the right is Ezra Amos May, HCR brake expert who later became yardmaster. By the newness of the vehicle, and by the real photo type, we can date the view to circa 1924-1925. Under magnification we can see that the motorman / ticket-taker's entry from the left side was more narrow than the entry for passengers on the right. Obviously each postcard is one-of-a-kind: no captioning, no photographer attribution & no publisher attribution. One of the 8 corners has trivial wear; back paper starting to brown evenly with age. We have not seen their likes elsewhere. Railbus real photos are rare for any railroad, anytime (these are early) & anywhere. They were meant to provide economical passenger service at a times & places where passenger traffic was declining. These belong together in a museum. $165.00 either or $320.00 gets them both. h(h)r(h)gg

VOSS / TEAS / FRESH ROASTED COFFEE / THE STORE FOR QUALITY // TULLY THE TAILOR" a Cincinnati Ohio street scene with even more signage (which might yield under magnification because the depth-of-field is good), horse-drawn buggy in the foreground, 2 horse-drawn wagons near the storefronts; approximately 6"x5" sepia-tone photo with blank back, imperfectly rectangular, long upper corner crease in the sky. URKP abbreviates Uniform Rank of Knights of Pythias, no longer an official auxiliary of Pythianism. Necessarily after 1879 because of the ampersand in the Frechtling name. We found the tailor's address as 16 South Second Street in a December 15 1911 advertisement. Coston's Confectionery advertised in the August 38 1910 Cincinnati Enquirer. Automobile_TheFrenchBrothers-200_small.jpg genealogy photo available from Judnick.comFRENCH. "THE / FRENCH BROS. / BAUER CO. // CREAM TOP MILK / CERTIFIED & INSPECTED MILK" signage on a small delivery truck, approximately 2.5" x 4.5" photo with 4 spots of album paste on back. Pencil annotation on back suggests Cincinnati Ohio as the location -- which we do not doubt. The very successful French Brothers had dairy operations throughout the Miami Valley, Warren & adjacent counties in Ohio, and Kentucky & Indiana locations near Cincinnati. Their Valley View farm furnished "inspected milk," -- i.e., milk which came under frequent scrutiny of a milk commission that had adopted the rules of the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine. $15.00 fo(c)ga

"This is m/t Trans Holm ex m/s Estrella ... taken in Jössingfjoden Norway, on the South-West Coast, near Kristiansand. Regards, Arild Frengen, Capt." continental size Kodak photograph annotated by her captain on the back. This Norwegian chemical tanker has since been scrapped in Denmark by the Fornaes Shiprecycling Company. The dark area at the left & center shows a plaque mounted on a jagged rock, fixing the place precisely in Norwegian: 'Her fant kampen sted mellom deN britiske destroyer cossack og det tyske hjelpeskip den 16 febr. 1940' -- referring to what is now known as the Altmark incident in which a British destroyer boarded a German ship carrying many British prisoners who were liberated in neutral Norwegian waters. Several interesting points of international law were raised by the incident. All edges are fine; the left edge looks ragged because the rock in the foreground is ragged, not the edge.
