"1330 // C M V 'ALCYONE' /
... // Port of DAMIETTA / EGYPT" photograph on Kodak paper showing the cargo
ship sully loaded alongside a dock, continental size but slightly reduced in
the sky by a scissors trim that could easily be straightened. The name of
the port is sometimes seen as Damiata or Domyat. In early 1942, this ship
evacuated civilians from Antigua to the United States; while on such duty
for the Naval Transportation Service she survived German submarine attacks.
Later in the war, she was attacked by air off Scoglitti Sicily, and
participated in the invasion of Makin Island (Gilbert Islands). In total
this storied ship earned eight (!) battle stars for service as a merchant
vessel. Truly rare. $20.00 es(m)gsa
"S.S. American Planter" showing the former Ormsby Class Attack Transport from the side, when transferred to the United States Lines & renamed; Kodak real photo postcard with identification penned in neatly on back (verifiable under magnification of the front), contrast a bit low. Participated in operations off the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Marianas, Western Caroline Islands, Philippines liberation, and Okinawa occupation -- and awarded at least 7 citations, ribbons & medals that we know of. Rare: the only postcard of her we have ever seen in anyone's stock. $15.00 s(m)gmmcpr
