"Départ des refugiées musulmanes de Salonique" now Thessaloniki / Θεσσαλονίκη; also captioned in Greek, showing the departure of Ottoman Muslim refugees with their worldly possessions in large bags, boarding a train, during the population exchange that took place between Turkey & Greece by treaty in the spring of 1923, after the Greco-Turkish War and before the following Treaty of Lausanne; unused carte postale from Editor D. Sonides in Salonika, light toning on back, minor corner & edge wear. The exchange effectively put a halt to horrific ethnic cleansings previously experienced by civilians loyal to both sides during the war. The cost? About 500,000 Muslims & 1,500,000 Orthodox Christians were uprooted from their homes & not allowed to return. Rare, historic & unusual. SALE IN PROGRESS gths

When operating later for Pink Aviation Services, it crashed on a forced landing near Hoogeveen Netherlands on 16 June 1996. There were no fatalities, but the plane was written off. $7.50 agn
