bags, boarding a train, during the population exchange that took place
between Turkey & Greece by treaty in the spring of 1923, after the Greco-Turkish War
and before the following Treaty of Lausanne; unused
carte postale from Editor D. Sonides in Salonika, light toning on back,
minor corner & edge wear. The exchange effectively put a halt to
horrific ethnic cleansings previously experienced by civilians loyal to both
sides during the war. The cost? About 500,000 Muslims & 1,500,000 Orthodox

1923. "Coolidge at
play -- / (notice playfulness in / his every line & feature.)" showing him
standing next to his father, with a typical serious expression on
his face (maintaining his 'silent Cal' persona), caption hand-written with
tongue-in-cheek on the front. This historic photo was taken of President
Calvin Coolidge standing next to his father, the Justice of the Peace who
swore him the previous night (August 2 1923) at Plymouth New Hampshire,
after the unexpected death of Warren G. Harding. Historians note that the
President was hurriedly whisked off to Washington DC on the 3rd, not to
return again until years later for a funeral in his
family.
They are standing on the stairs of the very house in which he was sworn;
compare the steps & porch turnings shown in the accompanying postcard
captioned "Where President Coolidge Took the Oath of Office". Uncaptioned sepia-tone real photo postcard
in vertical format mailed SEP 16 1927
(clear NEWPORT VT. & SPRING. MASS. R.P.O. hand cancel) to Mr. Foster
Copeland Jr. in Columbus Ohio. At the time of mailing President Coolidge had
already announced his somewhat surprising decision not to run for a second
full term. The card in vertical format belongs in the Smithsonian. Both

Unused regular-size postcard on quality pebbled stock showing Varney Air
Lines in flight carrying US air mail, signed Roy Anderson art copyrighted
1973, a little pencil writing on back will probably erase well, good edges.
Varney was the predecessor to United Airlines, and participated in the very
beginnings (April 1926, the Pasco-Boise-Elko route) of commercial air
transportation in the US.

where it falls within the image, small tear in the right front margin,

of LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin on July 8 1928 by Countess Helene von
Brandenstein-Zeppelin & other dignitaries, uncaptioned real photo postcard
(you are supposed to know what it is) mailed at Friedrichshafen 24.8.28 with
an 8-pfg stamp to Sulzberg Germany, message in German mentions the airship,
light but extensive toning on back. The lower front is not scrapped;
instead it appears to be some kind of foam that appears in all examples of
this Friedrichshafen scene. $20.00 bh

showing the ticker-tape parade on 1.9.1929 on Broadway New York for the
passengers & crew returning from their round-the-world tour of LZ127 Graf
Zeppelin, literally millions welcoming them. Explanation penciled on back in
German, trivial wear at one bottom corner. The explanation of the inset at
the bottom right front is hard to read but we believe it shows Captain

Tristan da Cuhna shortwave (7 Mc) QSL post card used 1962 by operator James
'Jimmy' Long (W4ZRZ) via W4ECI, internal crease that is hard to detect from
the front, small upper corner bend. In the previous year a volcanic
eruption forced all island inhabitants to evacuate. Expeditions such
as this one helped to assess the damage--which was tolerable in places, so a
resettlement resulted in 1963. thv&!
