"3331. TONKIN -- Son Exellence le Kham-Saï / marchant contre le Dé-Tham (Été 1909)" black & white carte postale addressed & messaged in French, when the country was called French Indo-China. The campaign of His Excellency Kham-Saï (Governor of Tonkin, the man in the center, in distinguishing garb) in the summer of 1909 was not successful. Dé-Tham had a price put on his head by the French Governor-General Klobukowsky after an unsuccessful attempt to take Hanoi, but was beheaded much later in his sleep on March 18 1913 -- ending a conflict that had lasted a quarter century. The shoeless but medaled man on the right signals to the viewer that some of the Governor's best & fearless men were going on the mission. Tonkin now lies completely in North Vietnam. The horse shown is a Vietnamese Hmong, diminutive in size, thick mane cropped to form a crest, prized for sure-footedness in mountainous terrains where Dé-Tham was known to be hiding, and thus appropriate. Publicizing this ill-fated campaign, Frenchman Louis Toullaine addressed the postcard to his niece Mademoiselle Luçienne Toullaine in Paris. Seldom offered. $22.50 vhh
