INDIANAPOLIS (MARION COUNTY). "A farm tractor attachment to fit all / standard makes and sizes / of automobiles // Auto Tractor pulling gang plow, four bases" with the back printed message 'you ever see AN Auto Tractor? / (SEE OVER)', postcard addressed but not mailed to 531 Vinton St. City & annotated on message side "Fair, Sept. 1914" (which places it as an Indiana State Fair item held at Indianapolis). This ludicrous idea was short-lived: it is doubtful that the poor-quality printing of this advertisement or its content (view obscured, no manufacturer detail, no claims ...) helped gather any prospective customers or investors. Later, the Three-P Auto Tractor Company did incorporate in Davenport Iowa in 1917, and was a founding member of the National Tractor Attachment Association. "Am sending you a picture of the tower we plastered inside and out ..." uncaptioned real photo postcard mailed June 22 1912, our caption from the message text, upper corner crease misses the image, traces of cancel ink show in the front borders, lightly toned back. This structure was located near the diving tower at Riverside Bathing Beach. It was refurbished when the Union Traction Company of Indiana bought the burnt-out White City Amusement Park in 1911 & restored it to a functionality that was to last 11 years. Decidedly rare. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg format. $2.00 ai(i)

The partially obscured sign with large letters in the background mentions E. MARKET ST., and there is such a road in Jeffersonville Indiana, but not in Jeffersonville Ohio or Jeffersonville Illinois. We make the sign out to be for _ER_B__S, a seller of cutlery, guns & (trac? or jani?)tors supplies (close-up at right). Uncaptioned sepia-tone real photograph (big as a regular-size postcard) showing the passenger steamer Pattona pausing to take on passengers; crisp focus, faint small upper corner crease mostly in the borders, paper-clip indent at top center edge. Built for the US Lighthouse Service in Jeffersonville Indiana and named Joseph Henry, this side-wheeler served in the 15th Lighthouse District at Memphis tending navigational aids. Decommissioned in 1903, it was sold & renamed the Louisiana, and later ended its career as we see here in 1916 (once again renamed). A model of this historic ship was first displayed in the Marine Transportation Hall of the Smithsonian & now is on view at its Hall of American Enterprise. A different, more elaborate postcard from the same carrier picturing a mail wagon from the front, divided back containing a lengthy poem, addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Chas. M. Jones (undoubtedly relatives) with an American Red Cross Christmas seal where the stamp would ordinarily go, dated Dec. 25th 1910, speckles of cancel ink through the address. Shown right. This unincorporated place in Union County no longer has a post office; when last we looked it could not be found with Google Maps, and it had no Wikipedia article yet. Mr. Gnibbs, the holder of the ticket who died in 1893, was the founder of the New Castle Indiana (nearby, to the west, connected by this railroad) Courier, minor edge wear. Williams in Bloomington Illinois, good edges, back paper browning evenly with age. Interesting. The change of horses let the animals return to the familiarity of their own stable every day. Also, if one of the loads was heavier than the other, each horse only pulled it half its work day, not all of it. The route travelled is now Indiana 150, designated as an Indiana Historic Pathway.
