"The Monument seen in the forefround(sic) marks the spot of the Haymarket Riots of May 4, 1886, in which several policemen were killed by dynamite bombs... / Haymarket Square, Scene of Riot, Chicago / No. 78. V. O. Hammon Pub. Co., Chicago" post card mailed MAR 27 1912 at Chicago's Canal Station to Mr. Robert Lohm in Pittsburg Pennsylvania, long upper corner crease, small bottom corner crease. Rare: quite possibly because of the misspelling of the word foreground in its first line, and certainly not what you would want tourists to think about! $10.00 i(c)lsh NEW / NOU / OPKOMEND
"THEY'RE BRINGING IT ALL BACK ... / POLICE ON THE / HOMEFRONT / A Collection Of Essays Compiled by NARMIC" paperback book copyrighted 1971 by authors who were uncomfortable with what they saw as militaristic trends in planning, training, weaponry, communications & intelligence systems for use in policing America. "This is m/t Trans Holm ex m/s Estrella ... taken in Jössingfjoden Norway, on the South-West Coast, near Kristiansand. Regards, Arild Frengen, Capt." continental size Kodak photograph annotated by her captain on the back. This Norwegian chemical tanker has since been scrapped in Denmark by the Fornaes Shiprecycling Company. The dark area at the left & center shows a plaque mounted on a jagged rock, fixing the place precisely in Norwegian: 'Her fant kampen sted mellom deN britiske destroyer cossack og det tyske hjelpeskip den 16 febr. 1940' -- referring to what is now known as the Altmark incident in which a British destroyer boarded a German ship carrying many British prisoners who were liberated in neutral Norwegian waters. Several interesting points of international law were raised by the incident. All edges are fine; the left edge looks ragged because the rock in the foreground is ragged, not the edge. Rare. $12.50 ns(o)lhg

"Warning of approach / Art IV.(5). He shall / give audible and sufficient warning .. when overtaking / foot passengers .. / ..." with signed Chas. Crombie (Charles Edward Crombie) comic art depicting a motorcyclist using his horn to warn pedestrians, a pig & some ducks of his approach along a country path; postcard from the Reo Series, printed in Germany, former owner's handstamp neatly on back, minor corner wear. The law quoted was the British Motor Car Act of 1903 (which went into effect in 1904). It differentiated for the first time between motorcars and motorcycles. A bell was another approved method spelled out in the law for warning pedestrians, but we wonder -- if the pedestrian could not hear the motorcycle, why would the horn or bell be heard? It is on such absurdities that comic postcards are made. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged 300-dpi scan (publication quality) in .jpg format for $3.75. a(c)mlc
