MEMORIAL DAY POSTCARDS & DECORATION DAY POST CARDS

"1ST Prize Float / Memorial Day Parade - May 29, 1966" in Hazel Park Michigan, unused chrome postcard. Float reads Fighting Soldiers From the Sky. $2.00 m(h)mp

1922 uncaptioned sepia tone Azo (triangles both ways) depicting a Memorial Day gathering on May 30 1922. Writing on back explains: 'To Cousin C. A. Trcz[hard to read] & Family / Memorial / Tue May 30 1922 /  In [hard to read] cemetery Miss Anna Smith spoke Lincoln address. Rev. C. C. Sh[hard to read]y spokesman for cemetery Rev Andiers? M.E.C., Rev. Brown & Thomas all present. P. S. of A. with G.A.R. Mrs. S. F. Thibbs? & Olie with others decorated graves in Soldier Square Ms. Gibb waved the flag over each grave. Very solom service as it may be the last for the living veterans of the Civil War 1867.' Bottom corner crease, ding in the bottom edge, a few spots of toning both sides. May 30 1922 was a Tue[sday]. Solemn is misspelled solom here. PS of A or the Princes of Syracuse is a Knights of Pythias boys organization. The Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery of Summit Hill Pensylvania was incorporated in 1879 and came under the direction of Post 177 of the G. A. R. in the late 1880's. A section of it came to be known as "Soldiers Square" where eventually 76 known Civil War Veterans were buried. As noted in the message, most of the 76 had been laid to rest by 1922, according well with the size of the gathering seen here. There is a Polish church [St. Stanislaus] in Summit Hill which accords well with the obvious ethnicity of the addressees. $75.00 $65.00 mp(s)cc
