ADVERTISING CARDS & MEDICAL ADS
"HIBBARD'S / Rheumatic Syrup / and Plasters" with gorgeous near-jewel-like colors depicting an Egyptian woman playing the harp, ad card of druggist S. M. Sackett of Monroe Michigan on the back gives wide-ranging claims & compositional details. Seldom seen & seldom offered.
AMUSEMENT PARKS & KANSAS. "Manufactured by / C. W. PARKER / World's Largest Manufacturer of Amusement Devices / Leavenworth, Kansas" with gorgeous art advertising the wooden horses they made for carousels & merry-go-rounds; unused circa-1908 (unevenly divided back) postcard, trivial edge wear, just a hint of toning on back. Rare: we found no other offers, recorded sales, or exhibits when we searched the Internet.
ARTISTS & CZECHOSLOVAKIA. "NÁS PRAPoR NADE TUNY VLAJE" [S accented, U accented] from his 'Czech period'. Unsigned Mucha. Name "Neubert" [one of his publishers in Prague during the period 1912 to 1928 according to the Neudin catalogue] appears at the lower left corner of the art. Mailed in Czechoslovakia to New York in 1921, contemporaneous stamp confirming the writer's date. There is a small nick in its right edge, a faint corner crease (not in the design), and some light toning on the back. Some printed information on the edge left of the message area is obscured by the sender's message which is written sideways in dark ink over parts of it.
CALIFORNIA & PRIVATE SHIPS. "2220 - Motor Boating at East Lake Park, Los Angeles, California" showing a couple in a small launch near a group of white swans, exceptionally colorful post card from Edward H. Mitchell, circa 1910 before it was known as Lincoln Park, large album remnant on back. Someone should paint this scene.
CATHOLICISM. Beautiful uncaptioned postcard with a winter scene, sent from St. John's Convent Jan 8 1907 to Mr. James McAllister in Beatty Pennsylvania (very small) by Sister Evangelist to convey a New Year greeting, small upper corner crease, faint but long internal crease nearby. The clear N.Y. & PITTS. TR 31 R.P.O. RMS hand cancel is determinative that this was Sister Evangelist Wall, the first principal of what is now the renamed JFK Catholic School in Washington Pennsylvania.
DESERTS & MONACO. "MONACO // J. VELTEN ÉDITEUR, KARLSRUHE" with signed Manuel Wielandt art. numbered 465 on back, unused post card, slight yellowing of the paper, internal crease with bend not into the art. A beautiful postcard. Note the prominence given to the cactus plant in order to implicitly convey the warm climate.
MAINE & PHOTOGRAPHERS. "SUNSET THRU FOG ON ATKINS BAY, POPHAM BEACH, MAINE" with lobster traps in silhouette, unused real photo post card from N. E. Otis (photographer in Bath, Maine), back is toned, but the front & edges are in excellent condition. This photographer is special: he conveys the beauty of the sunset in black & white, and simultaneously gives a you-are-there kind of feeling. Rare & beautiful.
NEW YORK &
"Old Mill Wheel, Peekskill, N. Y." lithochrome post card from The American News
Company, mailed there 1907, writing on front in sky, a little extraneous writing on the
back, minor corner wear, corner crease. A beautiful postcard that should inspire a
OCEAN-GOING SHIPS. "O.5" elegant Art Deco depicting a formal dining room, Red Star Line (their logo on back) post card circa 1925, unused, speckles of toning over the back, small bottom corner crease noticeable from the back, front is gorgeous.
PINUPS. "GOLDEN HOURS" art on a seldom-seen (have a look & you know why) Mutoscope arcade card from the Hotcha Girls series, depicting a redhead with pillow lips & a stunning figure clad only in a tight-fitting diaphanous bathing suit; fresh colors, light wear on both long edges appears to have been the subject of a color-restoration attempt (not ours!), very light toning at the top of the back is from the production process itself. Most every man's fantasy. The only time we have ever seen it in 31+ years of dealing. The best example the dealer we bought it from ever saw in his years of dealing; he saw no need to attempt to restore it either.
QUÉBEC & CHURCH INTERIORS. "Autel de la Ste-Vierge, Eglise St-Lambert" in Québec, sepia-tone AZO (squares in corners) real photo postcard from O. Allard (artist-photographer in nearby Montréal), small light smudge near the stamp box, mild corner wear. Rare.
SOUTH-WEST AFRICA & OCEAN SCENES. "Skelettküste / Skeleton Coast / Skedelkus / SWA / Namibia // Foto: H. W. Theiss" showing a shipwreck near the ocean shore; unused continental post card from a H. W. Theiss photo, copyrighted, small corner crease, minor wear to the top edge. Ready to inspire a painter.
SWEDEN. "Leksands Church in winter. Sweden. / Axel Eliassons Konstförlag Stockholm No 3432" showing people leaving a service, unused postcard with undivided back, light fingerprint toning on back, minor corner wear, light album marks at the corners. Leksand is in Dalama County. Someone should paint this beautiful scene.
TIBET & MOUNTAINS. "SCENERY OF TIBET" (Somehow, the word 'scenery' does not seem to do it full justice!) booklet cover & 8 different unused continental postcards from it. Quality printing published by the Lhasa Post Office. Mild wear & toning of the cover, but the postcards are thankfully in excellent condition. Mountain shown is Qomolangma. Would be spectacular displayed together.
WINTER SCENES & DETROIT PUBLISHING. "8980 A CHILLY DAY ON FIFTH AVENUE // COPYRIGHT 1905 / BY DETROIT / PUBLISHING / CO." obviously in the aftermath of a blizzard in New York City, unused postcard with undivided back, trivial corner wear, surprisingly fresh for its age. Someone should paint this scene. Hard to find!
