LOURENÇO MARQUEZ / Photo Wexelsen" interesting street scene seen from a high point, including the Oriental Kiosk & the Pyramid Kiosk; black & white on slightly yellowish paper, small corner crease misses image, lightly toned back, faint album marks at corners. Almost complete hexagonal CORREIO / 16. SET. 28 / VILA PERY hand cancel on 96-réis on 60-réis reply card (bilhete postal resposta) from Higgins & Gage #37 addressed to Braunschweig (Brunswick), lengthy typed message in German on back, tiny corner crease at bottom & just a little edge wear at the top affects nothing. Message is from a young farmer who is between harvest & sowing, chiding his former military Corps brethren for not writing to him with news. [He would have been drafted to serve with the Germans in World War I.] His typing is hunt & peck, and his typewriter is German but not the best (u can be umlauted, but no symbol for double s). The modern name of the originating town is Chimoio. Sold but both sides still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scans in .jpg or .tif format. $2.00 each or both for $3.75. m-m
"Chinde, Zambesi." showing a sternwheeler river boat with passengers aboard, flying 2 flags; black & white bilhete postal written at Port Herald 1903 from Chinde, one corner crease in the message area, minor tropical toning. Clear 16 FEB06 hexagonal Beira hand cancels on 10-réis bilhete postal with
pair of 5-réis stamps added to make rate to Eschweiler bei Aachen Allemagne
(Germany), illustration is "Chimolo - Residencia de chefe"
(chief's residence), minor wear to
the corners, lowest stamp wrapped around bottom edge (part on back is
damaged), small corner crease into same stamp. Back is a personal note in
German written the previous day. Gorgeous!
