Bridge, Bellaire, O." unused circa 1907 - 1908 (unevenly divided back) postcard published by The Acmegraph Company, trivial corner wear. Hard to find! Ohio_Bellaire_4CarnegieSteel-100.jpg (289341 bytes)BELLAIRE (BELMONT COUNTY). "4  CARNEGIE STEEL WORKS, BELLAIRE, O." from an undisclosed publisher, mailed there 1910 (clear & complete flag cancel), back paper starting to yellow with age, light toning on front, trivial corner wear, top edge not cut exactly parallel to the bottom edge in the printing process. Image, at a pronounced tilt, so we doubt they made many; for whatever reason, the card is scarce. In the mid-1980's the importance of the steel mills to Bellaire's economy lessened with implementation of new coal-burning regulations & labor difficulties. Postcard sold. Still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (almost 2x original area) 100-dpi scan in .jpg format. $1.50 oi

Fire_ChemicalEngine-200_small.jpg Ohio engine post card available from LotsOfCards.comBELLAIRE (BELMONT COUNTY). "CHEMICAL ENGINE No 2 / BELLAIRE FIRE DEP'T. / 182345  Bellaire, Ohio" with 2 horses pulling specialized equipment manufactured by Merryweather & Sons 1902 - 1914. The top fitting behind the drivers carried a lead bottle of sulfuric acid (punctured by turning a handle at the rear), which reacted with a water/bicarbonate solution in the lower rear copper cylinder causing carbon dioxide gas to expel the liquid at high pressure. For communities that could afford such specialization, fire fighters could provide near-instant response on arrival at a fire scene, whilst other engines were delayed getting their connections to a hydrant.  There is a long horizontal crease which will not occupy your attention for long; the back is toned; the corners are rounded; the cancel is indistinct, but the message is dated January 22 1910. We are told the man holding the reins is Jacob Roy McMillen. Another example of this postcard is in the book 'Images of America / Bellaire' by Holly Bruno and Andrew Ehritz. Another is in a museum. Under high magnification a curved BELLAIRE OHIO is over the right front wagon wheel. Definitely an uncommon postcard. SALE IN PROGRESS fho(b)

Ohio_Bellevue_BMethodistEpiscopal-200_small.jpgBELLEVUE (HURON COUNTY). "Bellevue Methodist Episcopal Church." black & white postcard with blue caption & undivided back, postcard mailed there 1907 (stamp removed), noticeable corner & edge wear. At first glance it appears as if the background sky consists of clouds or is a map; however, the map-like printing occurs over the church as well--so this is a printing error. We doubt that many were sold; and we doubt even more that many of those were actually used. An oddity for the advanced Bellevue collector. $15.00 oea

BETHEL (CLERMONT COUNTY). "WALTER A. Our caption relates the sign at the left end of the building. While no caption date, annotation, or postmark is there to guide us, the card is necessarily late 1907 or later because of its divided back. Keeping in mind the headline-grabbing trust-busting activities of President Teddy Roosevelt during his September 1901 -  March 1909 presidency, we thus have a fairly confident estimate this photograph was taken late 1907 - early 1909. Possibly unique: no caption, no publisher information, no photographer attribution.
