FAYETTE (GORHAM TOWNSHIP, FULTON COUNTY). Sepia-tone real photo postcard mailed MAR 13 1911 at Fayette Ohio to Mr. Robert Cunningham in Pittsford Michigan. Must-read message a testament to the inventiveness & hard work of the farmer of the day: ' Fayette, O. Mch. 12, 1911 / ... This is a BHP steam engine I bought last winter for $8.00. I put new flues in it, made patterns and got new grates, made a new valve gear and put on it and I has not cost me $25.00 and is good as new. I grind all our feed now and shell our corn. I use it to run the sausage grinder, grindstone, feed grinder, corn sheller and farming mill. I am going to get about a 20 inch buzz saw and saw all of our wood, get a plow point grinder, and use it to pump water when the mill does not run. ... L. W. Blaker'. Ohio_FernbankDam_FDNear-200_small.jpg Ohio advertising available from Judnick.comFERNBANK DAM (HAMILTON COUNTY). An uncommon card that is not in the superb digital Ohio Memory Collection of the Ohio Historical Society. To our knowledge this is the only postcard showing that ship. The 1918 Indiana Magazine of History has a short mention of it taking furniture from Tell City to the South in 1870, so many of its travels were well before the postcard era. Admiral Cafe advertising is also scarce, by the way. $15.00 o(f)o(c)

Durfee / Forest, O." showing the #1 New York Seattle Racer paused outside of Pfeiffer' Garage with steam emanating from its engine; the neighboring tin shop signage plain & at the far right a sign 'VICTOR TALKING MACHINES SOLD HERE' over the trademark dog sculpture at the bottom of the window. The name of the local photographer Durfee is embossed in script lettering at the right bottom front of this unused AZO (triangles up) real photo postcard. Ford won the race in connection with the Alaskan Yukon Exposition (in Seattle) with its #2 racer, which resembled #1 (except possibly for a wider track), and which was subsequently disqualified & the subject of ensuing law suits. Depth-of-field & contrast are good, as are the edges; light album impressions at the corners. For more information see the Automobile Quarterly, Volume 10 Number 4 (June 1909), pages 378 -  383. Sign on the leftmost Ford reads '75,000 Ford CARS for 1912' -- a production promise kept in promotional materials for a year, then helping to explain the lowering of some of their prices due to production-line efficiencies. Focus is crisp, contrast a bit high, good edges, a few thin ink spots at the top back, faint album marks at the back corners. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $2.00 o(f)ga

FORT ANCIENT STATE MEMORIAL / FORT ANCIENT STATE PARK (WARREN COUNTY). "Up Ft Ancient Hill" in Warren County Ohio; sepia-tone real photo post card mailed SEP 24 1914 to Mr. D. B. Reed in Somerville Ohio by motorcycle salesman Richard Morrison in Middletown Ohio who wrote on back with surprising candor: 'Started over Sunday morning and broke down near Jacksonburg had to walk home. If I can still be of service to you let me know. If you see [name] tell him I have a fork spring for him.' A fork spring suspension allows a motorcycle to travel off-road or race in motocross events (a fairly new sport at that time). One of the main advantages of motorcycle travel to a bicyclist would be the ability to easily climb hills. Good focus & composition, as you would expect from a proof, paper browned a bit with age, small dark spot in sky from a drip of chemical when printed. 'Groveport' is also hand-written on the front, but the photographer underlined the Ohio in 'Groveport Ohio' on the back. Ohio_Groveport_WestCherryStreetProofNPB-100.JPG (276225 bytes)GROVEPORT / WERT'S GROVE / RAREY'S PORT (FRANKLIN COUNTY). "West Cherry Street" as it looked in 1910, with residences at the left that still stand today; sepia-tone proof for a postcard with the caption that was eventually used written in hand on the back by the photographer Daniel Boone Carlock. Good focus & composition, as you would expect from a proof, paper browned a bit with age. A proof at this stage does not have a postcard back; instead the photographer leaves room to note the caption agreed with the store that would purchase his postcards to sell. Literally unique, belongs in a museum. $30.00 o

HALLSVILLE (ROSS COUNTY). "BOECHER BROS.  General Merchandise  // BREAD SOLD HERE" showing their personnel lined up outside, uncaptioned (so we used some of the store signs) sepia-tone real photo postcard mailed there APR 4 1908 (clear hand cancel) to Master Forest Valentine in nearby Kingston (same-day arrival postal mark) by his uncle Herbert, mentioning the then up-coming funeral of Sally Black, small spot of toning in the message area obscures nothing, minor corner wear. Sign at the top right: 'Dr. Bell's PINE-TAR-HONEY / COUGHS COLDS GRIP / STRENGTH TO THE LUNGS'. The tokens (Token Catalogue #131887) for this store's bread occasionally come up for auction; they helped to publicize their somewhat unlikely sideline.
