Uncaptioned real photo postcard showing a horse-drawn flower-decorated cart full of dressed-up children, obviously for a parade, bearing the advertising sign 'HOFFSTODT'S / CITY GREEN HOUSES', sepia-tone from Mossholder's Studio in Shelby Ohio, light brownish paper. The Mansfield Telephone Company serviced Shelby; its 1902 directory for Shelby lists W. A. Hoffstodt's residence at 22 Sharon. Push-pin damage has taken two small chunks out of the bottom edge (neither anywhere near the image) & just nicked the top edge twice; framing would easily obscure that difficulty. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This series of historic photos with unusually precise dating in the caption once collectively constituted a railway employee's report. Most likely at least one set was produced for railroad management & another set for the insurance company; captioning so they could discuss the images & their claims over the phone. We offer what we have secure in the belief that these were not commercially produced. We have seen similar shots for other Clark County communities such as Medway & Enon. $30.00 gets all three. o(s)d  NEW / NEU / NOUVEAU

TIFFIN (SENECA COUNTY). "Williard Hall ... Howe ... Payne ... Sphinx ... Hesperian ... Wittenberg ... Harvard ... Morreti" uncaptioned sepia-tone real photo postcard, for whose caption we take the pennants hanging vertically from left-to-right, light oxidation with age, good edges. Showing 10 lady students in similar light & dark attire being addressed under 'The Archibald' sign. What is this assemblage? This is Heidelberg College in Tiffin Ohio, as the name of the hall confirms. The date is the 1912 - 1913 academic year -- the only year that there was an Hesperian literary society at Heidelberg. Those Hesperians broke into 2 literary societies -- the Euglossian Society (colors purple and white) & the Philalethean Society (colors green and gold). Question: Are the young women in the picture wearing green & gold, or purple & white? Easy answer! So what we have in this Eugnique photograph is the very birth of the Euglossian Society, tied-for-oldest fraternal society on the Heidelberg campus today! No one else can show you this. $80.00 $60.00 o(t)c(h)f SALE PRICE: SAVE $20.00 (25% OFF)

TIRO (CRAWFORD COUNTY). "A Merry Christmas / Amos Wilson Kaufman / Rural Letter Carrier.  Route No. 2" circa-1910 postcard with 4-stanza poem printed on the message side, addressed simply to 'Joe Wert and family'. Ordinarily items like this are hard to place, because a location is not specified -- but not this one! The carrier's name is sufficiently distinctive that only one such name is found in a Google search: this man & his wife both buried in Oakland Cemetery in Auburn Township, just outside of Tiro Ohio (Crawford County). Cinching the deal is the addressing: there are many Wert families living in Crawford County. So Amos Wilson worked out of the Tiro Post Office, most likely servicing rural people he knew in Auburn Township. $20.00 $16.00 o(a)o(t)pg-ro SALE PRICE: SAVE $4.00

TOLEDO (LUCAS COUNTY). Uncaptioned circa-1910-1918 sepia-tone Azo (triangles up) real photo postcard showing 6 Lake Shore Rail Road trainmen standing before a baggage cart loaded with Uhl Brothers numbered crates ready to ship, exemplary focus & contrast. The Uhl Brothers, important makers of sturdy metal furniture, were located exclusively in Toledo. They moved in 1910 to co-locate with this depot on Dorr Street, so they had no need to ship from any other depot. And they then had no need for wagons to take their products for offloading at railroad sidings; all they needed was a baggage cart, and even small (less-than-wagon-load) orders could go out quickly. Yes, their name had changed to Toledo Metal Furniture Company in 1904. But if you had crates so obviously sturdy & custom-made, and everyone knew who you were, would you have thrown them out? Notice these small crates are not suitable for steel tables, soda fountain chairs, typewriter chairs, or cabinets--some of their larger mainline specialties. Those small crates could have lasted them quite some time. Our surmise is that the picture was taken for an advantageous business reason in 1910: to show visually to any prospective customer that they could now get even small orders to the depot quickly. That is what the image is saying! The biography of Philip E. Uhl is located at www.onlinebiographies.info if you want to learn more about the business he founded. $40.00 $37.50 o(t)r(l)a SALE PRICE: SAVE $2.50
