PHILADELPHIA (PHILADELPHIA COUNTY). "THE BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS / GASOLINE LOCOMOTIVE / THESE WILL CARRY FOOD AND SUPPLIES TO / THE U S A BOYS IN THE TRENCHES // U. S. A. / 189 // THE B. L. W. PHILADELPHIAN" uncaptioned Azo (triangles up) real photo postcard showing a truck delivering an ultra-small 4-wheel trench railway engine to sailors at the port of Philadelphia. Ordered by the Army for use in World War I during static & prolonged trench warfare in France, such railroads were meant to be entirely movable by truck, have a low profile or signature, have the ability to negotiate small-radius curves with minimal clearances, and be easily righted if derailed. Ultra rare, the design of this engine was undoubtedly an important secret at the time. If your experience is the same as ours, you will not find another image of it on the Internet. The Wikipedia article which mentions & explains its existence is not illustrated with photo or a diagram, for example. Belongs in a museum. $200.00 wp(p)t NEW / UUSI / NOU

PHILADELPHIA (PHILADELPHIA COUNTY). Uncaptioned & reduced-by-trimming real photo postcard showing an engine with flatcars before & after it (probably for carrying coal). Lengthy lettering in three lines on the engine is not in the best focus with 3 lines crossing it for extra difficulty but we read all except 2 or 3 characters (indicated by ...) under very high magnification as 'HENRY SHOEMAKER ... / CONTRACTORS / PHILADELPHIA PA.' Henry Francis Shoemaker (1845 - 1918) was a banker, president of the Mineral Range Railroad, chairman of the executive committee of the Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton, and majority shareholder of the Cleveland Lorain & Wheeling Railroad. Addressing the 2 or 3 letters we cannot read for sure, we find mention of a 'Henry Shoemaker's Co.' in Northampton Pennsylvania mentioned by the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society; Northampton is about 53 miles away from Philadelphia as the crow flies. Rare & important: we could not find the likes of this image when we searched the Internet. $100.00 p(p)g(s)r(h)

PITTSBURGH / PITTSBURG (ALLEGHENY COUNTY). "THE WILLIAM F. GABLE CO., / ALTOONA, PA." embossed inscription in the lower left corner of an approximately 9½"x7½" sepia-tone photograph of a youngster, 2 women & 3 delivery men with numerous loaves of Haller's Butter-Krust bread, near some cases of meat open in the foreground that are marked Altoona. The Butter-Krust brand was registered in 1910, but was so good it prompted other bakeries to steal it, so court battles ensued. The number of loaves of bread seen here, each enclosed in "hermetically sealed waxed parchment wrappers" (per ads as far west as Pittsburgh), suggests this is the Haller's Eagle Bakery in Altoona. But we cannot explain the meat! Haller himself served in Pittsburgh as a baker's apprentice prior to buying the Eagle Bakery, and the Haller Brothers Company operated successfully from Pittsburgh from 1910 on. In Pittsburgh the delivery men were called Hallermen. Go figure! It will take a local historian to figure this image out completely. $25.00 $20.00 p(a)p(p)fg(h) SALE PRICE: SAVE $5.00 (20% OFF)
