The boat at the left was for safety: the waters were frigid, the currents tricky, & many beds of kelp had to be traversed (an art in and of itself). A previous dealer mistakenly penciled CINN. O. in the left front border for location; Peter was from Cincinnati, which is why it is mentioned in the caption. If you want to read a detailed version of the race, simply get the Cincinnati Enquirer of 1/17/27 (the next day), & read the article on page 11. Rare! Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged 300-dpi scan (publication quality) in .jpg format for $3.75. s(s)c(s)ro(c)g

Race-winner and runner-up pose with their Indian motorcycles on an unused sepia-tone Azo (triangles all up) real photo post card, small upper corner crease nowhere near the image. The size of the trophy indicates a major race circa-1910; it is similar, but not identical to the trophy on display on display at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington Ohio. The Indian factory fielded a "team" in name only those days. Competitions amongst their riders were fierce; as can be judged by the expression & body language shown by the 2nd place finisher. An excellent account of what tactics were used in such races can be read at www.firstsuperspeedway.com/photo-gallery/charles-fearless-balke, further explaining the aforementioned expression & body language.
