"Bazar in Ada-Kaleh" Then an island in the Danube near Orsova, with fortifications built by the Austrians, it later became the Gibraltar of the Ottoman Empire, and was submerged by a dam in 1971. The native shopkeepers spoke Romanian, Hungarian, Turkish, Serbian & German (Transylvania was nearby). Wares were gold, embroidery, tobacco, fruits & sweets; there was also a barber shop, black & white with dark red caption on yellowish paper, no postcard back (completely blank). We suspect this card is a souvenir from the Hungarian Expo of 1896. Sold but front still available for scholarly study & research as a full-size & enhanced 72-dpi scan in .jpg or .tif format. $1.50 r

Six unused Braşov postcards to emphasize on both of their sides that Transylvania has joined with Romania by overprinting World War I postcards with 'România' on the front & 'CARTA POSTALĂ on the backs as shown in our 4 examples above. Unused, dating to 1919 when that union took place. Braşov is referred to in the front captioning in German as Kronstadt, because Saxons were there from the 13th century & still are a significant ethnic group there. Trivial edge wear throughout, back lightly toned, one back heavily toned. History in your hands, for a total of only $15.00. rh

The name of the city is often spelled with an accent as Curtea de Argeş.  The church was restored in 1886 by architects Andre Lecomte du Nouy & Nicolae Gabrielescu. $3.50 ra

Lot of 90 cards--most post cards bearing low-denomination stamps correctly used & the rest postal cards, a few with stamps added. Most used 1964-1997. Most are continental size (approximately 4"x6"), the rest regular size (approximately 3.6"x5.6"). Duplication present but a good variety of stamps, cancels, and topics. Rates: eighty-four 40 bani--click here for a few examples shown full-size; four 55 -bani; two 2-lei; one 2,10-lei; six 150-lei; and one 190-lei. Stamp topics include:  animals, architecture, aviation, birds, famous people, flowers, Madonnas, Olympics & ships. Most items are addressed to Cluj-Napoca, with a good variety of sending town cancels & transit marks such as: Azuga, Brad, Bucuresti, Buzias, Constanta, Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud, Mamaia, Mangalia, Rm. Vilcea, Sangeore-Bai, Techurghiol & many Cluj-Napoca. Twenty-eight of these postcards are based on the work on a variety of individual photographers (not agencies) who are credited on the back: D.                          INTERNATIONAL POSTCARDS TO ROMANIA
        
Lot of 94 postcards to Romania from various countries including: Bahamas, Brasil, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic, Denmark, East Germany, France, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, United States, West Germany. Most are continental size, a few regular size. A good variety of dates with many better items during the most repressive period of the communist / Nicolai Ceausescu regime (1965-1989) when any international mail (especially Western block countries & Hungary) was regarded with suspicion by the secret police & arrival markings were applied for record-keeping purposes (when the sender's cancel was not clear). Normal postal wear, nothing tatty. 12 examples shown are all incoming mail during the Ceausescu regime. Left column: Spain, Switzerland, Iraq, Greece, France & USA.
