Most of her passengers were immigrants fleeing poverty to start anew in Canada or the US. On July 21st 1918 she was torpedoed & sank in Tees Bay England with a loss of 36 lives. The company carried oil from the Kern River fields to San Francisco where it would be marketed. Ports of call of these Australian-Oriental Line ships included Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns, Thursday Island, Hong Kong, and Lord Howe Island. Both ships were used in forcible deportations of ethic Chinese to China as part of the 'White Australia' policy. During World War II these refrigerated ships replenished 40+ ships of the Eastern Fleet for the Royal Navy.
