St. Angelo." with a harbor scene that may not include the named British ship; black & white real photo postcard mailed JUL 13 1952 from the USS Salem while on the southern coast of France (Villefranche probably), small bottom corner creases miss the image, other corner & edge wear. $3.00 ms(m)-n

GREAT BRITAIN / UNITED KINGDOM. "OSLOFJORD" with caption taken from the ship's name showing prominently, unused color postcard issued by the Norwegian America Line (NAL), envelope glue disturbance on back from a covered mailing, edges are good. Used by the Royal Navy as a troopship, it struck a mine on December 1 1940, with some loss of life & subsequent controversy (and propaganda) when it was not towed to the nearest port. Not to be confused with later ships which bore this name, she had two funnels. $20.00 s(m)s(o)d NEW / NEU / NOUVEAU

CO., N.Y." with lithographed art in color showing it with a tug & several small masted ships nearby; private mailing card with undivided back & paper browning evenly with age, very late usage, two small creases weaken an upper corner, a little toning near the bottom right front corner. The Red Star Line ship Vaderland was chartered to the American Line. Later renamed Southland and used as a troopship, she was torpedoed off the Irish coast in June 1917. "S. S. NITTA MARU, N. Y. K. New Liner. / 16,500 Gross Tons" with a side view underway near a city, large violet backstamp reads 'SOUVENIR OF THE VOYAGE / 1940 / S.S. NITTA MARU N.Y.K. LINE", unused post card includes Japanese captioning, trivial wear at one corner, otherwise fairly fresh. Launched May 1939, this luxury trans-Pacific luxury liner was sold to the Imperial Japanese Navy in February 1941 which converted her into the Taiyö-class escort carrier Chuyo. During World War II, it carried prisoners of war (including from Wake Island & from the sinking of submarine USS Sculpin). In the fall of 1942 she was converted into an escort aircraft carrier. On 4 December 1943 it was torpedoed multiple times close to Hachijo Island, and sank with loss of about 1250 lives, including 20 of the prisoners of war on board. $200.00 s(o)js(m) NEW / NEU / NOUVEAU

'Monowai.'" showing a side view of her underway, captioned real photo with excellent composition & contrast, hand annotations on otherwise blank back supply some history. This ship was owned by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand. It saw service during World War II as HMNZS Monowai, an armed merchant cruiser, and later as a landing ship & troopship. Rare: the best collection of British Commonwealth ships we ever saw had no image of her. $16.00 ns(u)s(m)

POLAND. "Dar Pomorza" showing the tall ship under full sail, on a Christmas card used 1974, 3 light streaks of rubber band discoloration & 2 stress marks noticeable from the front. Has a long history as a training ship, including for the Polish Naval Academy at Gdynia. $1.75 ps(m)

PORTUGAL. "RICKMER RICKMERS" continental card with glossy color photo showing the 3-masted bark moored at Hamburg Germany to serve as a museum, apparently one half of what once was a greeting card. Having a long history, she previously sailed as the Portuguese Navy training ship NRP Sagres, winning the Tall Ships' Race in 1958. $5.00 gs(m)s(o)p NEW / NEU / NOUVEAU

  Korea_Corietz-200_small.jpg gunboat postcard available from Judnick.com  RUSSIA. "CORIETZ, RUSSIAN GUN-BOAT, & A TRANSPORT" with side view of her mostly submerged, also captioned in 2 oriental languages, unused carte postale, very light toning both sides due to album contact, good edges. The aged ship (often spelled Korietz) was sunk near the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War on February 9 1904 off the coast of what is now Inchon Korea. $11.50 ks(m)rj

CMV ALCYONE. "1330 // C M V 'ALCYONE' / ... // Port of DAMIETTA / EGYPT" photograph on Kodak paper showing the cargo ship sully loaded alongside a dock, continental size but slightly reduced in the sky by a scissors trim that could easily be straightened. The name of the port is sometimes seen as Damiata or Domyat. In early 1942, this ship evacuated civilians from Antigua to the United States; while on such duty for the Naval Transportation Service she survived German submarine attacks. Later in the war, she was attacked by air off Scoglitti Sicily, and participated in the invasion of Makin Island (Gilbert Islands). Commissioned in late October 1918, this was her first (delivering flour) of only 2 trips in World War I; decommissioning was in May 1919. We doubt there are many photos of this ship from that brief period in existence.
