ShipRiver_HarborBoat-200_small.jpg sidewheeler postcard available from Judnick.com"Harbor Boat 'Mark Twain', St. Louis, Mo." about to depart, 4 men walking up the extended gang plank; black & white post card with undivided back published by The St. Louis News Company (their No. A1006), mailed there 1906 to Miss Kathryn Zane in Hillsboro Ohio, very light toning both sides, small right front corner creases, other upper corner with surface wear that almost blends in with the clouds. Built in 1873 as 'Elon G. Smith', renamed 'St. Louis' in 1882, renamed & then briefly piloted as 'Mark Twain' by author Mark Twain himself in 1902. Said by others to be very scarce, we have seen later-dated examples offered as high as $100.00. We disagree: the 1902 rechristening was indeed a newsworthy event, witness that the publisher here was the newspaper itself; and examples have been seen mailed until at least 1909. So we ask only $17.50. m(s)s(r)a

The sternwheeler was first registered in 1897 to the West Memphis Ferry Company; later in 1918 she was purchased by the Patton-Tully Transportation Company for towboat usage. The very few photos we found of her were at Memphis Tennessee, West Memphis Tennessee, or Mound City Arkansas which is across from Memphis. Given the lineup we see here, the location is undoubtedly Memphis itself. Uneven contrast from the printing, with 3 distinct areas, but the detail is good enough due to the focus.
