The set this is from dates to 1937, mostly picturing Cincinnati Reds, and all are 'extremely scarce' according to a recent Love of the Game Auction write-up. [Its auctioned counterpart there had a blank back, but ours has the postcard back.] Frank McCormick played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1934 - 1945, then the Philadelphia Phillies & Boston Braves. This first baseman made All Star appearances 9 consecutive times (1938 - 1946) & became World Series champion in 1940. "Newark, O. / ca. 1910" unused sepia-tone Azo real photo (triangles up) showing a baseball player in a Newark (Licking County Ohio) uniform standing next to a grandstand, caption from pencil writing on back, a few tiny speckles of toning in the front borders have no effect on value, the front paper has an overall light yellowish caste which is common with sepia-tone photos, back paper has an even yellowish-grayish appearance consistent with age. From the estate of a Southern Ohio semi-pro league player (whose name was not divulged by the previous owner). According to Playle's useful real photo dating information, the stamp box puts the postcard in the 1904 - 1918 timeframe; its divided back further narrows the period to 1908 - 1918. $30.00 s(b)o(n)*!!!

Vera B." with a 1906 game paused for the picture; uncaptioned (so we used all the writing at the right front) sepia-tone real photo postcard mailed JAN 23 1907 at Holmesville Ohio to Miss Vynita Collier in Akron Ohio, tiny upper corner crease, 4 small holes neatly punched (to make part of a postcard pillow), uneven toning on back spares the front. Vynita was a teacher & long-time member of the Ohio State Teachers Association, which helps to explain the unusual subject matter. Holmesville is a small village (about 300 people now, probably less in 1906) in the Prairie Township of Holmes County Ohio. "Basketball / Central Hi Akron / 1914" as handwritten on back of an Azo (triangles up) real photo from Peck's Studio in Akron Ohio, the players with hand-printed names on front, some typed in the left caption area as well: J. Jones Left guard, K. Marting coach, C. Flower center, Hanscom left forward, Wortman right guard & captain, Spicer right forward & manager. All corners worn & rounded, bottom corners creased, noticeable wear at the top edge, oxidation consistent with age, some album paste residue on the toned back. The January 21 1914 Akron Beacon Journal on page 9 relates that this team had a 4-0 start to their season & scored a record number of points in so doing--which possibly occasioned their posing for this image.
