Circa 1910-1920. The chest itself is sometimes offered for decorative value, but all the tools are hardly ever present. "COLUMBIA" unused & uncaptioned (so we use the brand name) circa-1912 sepia-tone Cyko real photo postcard showing a well-dressed boy just back from a parade in his beribboned pedal car. Costing $9.50 at the time (a lot of money then!), its specifications we take from an ad of that day: body made of well-seasoned wood with sheet metal front, finished special auto red, striped in bronze, green panel seat is hanged and is adjustable, body nicely stenciled, gears & wheels enameled green, starting crank, license tag & front apron gear, steering & driving gear and wheels made of steel, 18" rear wheels, 55 pounds crated (the largest size). "Master Richard Scott Jr. Exeter Calif. / The sun shown in his face made him blink. This was one of the Chrysanthemum Fair prize winners in the Juvenile Parade trimed(sic) with white & purple chrysanthemums." uncaptioned (so we use all the writing on the back) sepia-tone Azo (triangles up) real photo postcard with good edges, writing around the front border further described the pedal car, including details that could not be seen, but that writing has been whited out. The Fair mentioned on back was first done in 1913 by ladies of the Presbyterian church, and included a carnival. By 1931 it became the Emperor Grape Festival, and it is now known as the Exeter Fall Festival. Obviously one-of-a-kind, it should be displayed in a museum or on the cityofexeter.com website.
