UNUSUAL TRANSPORTATION POST CARDS & POSTCARDS
"132. A REINDEER OUTFIT, LAPLAND" with reindeer pulling a sleigh with 2 people, postcard, unused, short linear mark on back. $4.00 (nu)
/ House moving from Lamro / to Winner" in Tripp County South Dakota, showing
house-moving equipment hitched up to the Pioneer Saloon with its anxious
owners alongside in automobiles, travelling as indicated by the handwritten
caption; unused real photo post card, a few very small spots of light toning
on back, trivial corner & edge wear. When the railroad connected to Winner,
many residents of Lamro gave up their aspirations of being the Tripp County
seat. Thirty Lamro structures were then moved across the plains in 1910
taking up new positions grouped together at one end of Winner. The Pioneer
Saloon (listed in the 1908 Lamro directory) shown here, per visible signage,
was one of those thirty. In 1910 the building became known as the Jay Weaver
Saloon, named after the man who owned it during the move shown (who is
probably in the picture); in 1911, it became the Guthrie Pool Hall; and in
1912-13, it became the Haisch & Company Meat Market. Obviously
one-of-a-kind: no printed captions, no photographer attribution, no publisher
attribution. Ultra rare. Belongs in a museum.
"19. - DJIBOUTI. - Vendeurs d'eau" with a camel-drawn cask, black & white post card mailed there 1914 (French Somali Coast stamp tied to France). corner crease, small corner crease, lightly toned back, lightly toned front. "447 Private Car Josephine at Lorain Ohio" showing the
private car owned by the Everett-Moore syndicate (owner of the Lake Shore
Electric Railroad which serviced that city), curtained windows
throughout & the name Josephine conspicuously on its side; sepia-tone real
photo postcard manufactured by the Leiter Post Card Company in Lorain,
mailed at Lorain AUG 4 1909, back paper browning with age. An ARGO starch
sign can be seen in the background. Young sender commented: 'This is the car
that had all the windows broke out of it by a scleet(sic) stom(sic).'
meaning sleet storm, of course. Rare. When we visited the internet, no one
was offering it & no collector or museum was exhibiting it.

BICYCLE, ORMOND--DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA. DETROIT PHOTOGRAPHIC CO.,
PUBLISHER" undivided back postcard mailed 1905 to Miss Sarah Mead in East
Hampton Connecticut, mild corner wear, sender's pen started to run out of
ink on the front. 1905 was the year this pioneering auto manufacturer tried
its hand at auto racing (including the prestigious & more traditional 1905
Gordon Bennett Cup), in an attempt to publicize its switch from steam
engines to internal combustion engines. Unusual subject matter. Hard to find, especially at this price:
"6913 Bergbahn Zermatt-Gornergraf, / Castor-Pollux-Breithorn" showing an Swiss incline railroad from the side, postcard airmailed 26.12.68 from Zürich to Connecticut (pair of 30+10 1968 Pro Juventute bird stamps tied by clear cancel). $3.75 su-s

"Automobile Railway, Eldorado Springs, Colo., C. & So. R. R." miscaptioned because each of the 3 cars on this segmented miniature railway train is distinctly labeled 'ELDORADO SPRINGS / RAILWAY CO.' or 'The Automobile Road / ELDORADO SPRINGS RAILWAY'. The Colorado & Southern referred to in the caption ran from 1898 to 1908; the Eldorado Springs Railway was incorporated in 1909 with the intention of servicing an amusement park with electrified passenger service. Thus, this rare postcard documents precisely the 1908 / 1909 transition. It is unused, faint album marks at the front corners; discoloration at the bottom 2 corners attributable to the original chromo-lithographic process itself. We have seen reproductions of this postcard offered at over $300.00; but why not own the real thing, available from us, for only $60.00? r(e)c(e)u
